Data: you can’t measure what you can’t see

Data: you can’t measure what you can’t see

Most finance teams don’t have a data problem.

They have a đ˜ƒđ—¶đ˜€đ—¶đ—Żđ—¶đ—čđ—¶đ˜đ˜† problem.

Every day, businesses generate thousands of data points, yet many Finance Directors are still making important decisions using reports that are days (or even weeks) out of date, manually compiled spreadsheets, or information pulled from multiple disconnected systems. The businesses creating the greatest value aren’t necessarily collecting more data, they’re making better use of the data they already have.

Read below about The Five Drivers of Data-Driven Value, written by our Data Analytics specialist Surinder Bahra. She explores and explains how better visibility leads to better control, stronger performance and ultimately greater value.

When you check your smartwatch, what are you looking for?

Your steps, heart rate. sleep, recovery?

In seconds, you know exactly where you stand and whether you need to act. Now think about your business. Can you do the same thing?

We see time and time again from working with Finance Directors that the data is there
but you can’t see it clearly enough to use it.

And if you can’t see it, you can’t measure it properly.  And if you can’t measure it, you definitely can’t manage it.

Which is where value starts to leak.

The shift from reporting to control

As a Finance Director, you’re not there just to report the numbers. You’re there to drive performance, protect value, and shape decision-making.

But that only works if you have real visibility. Because you cant measure what you can’t see.

The Five Drivers in practice

What we’ve found is that businesses that really get control of their performance all move through the same progression:

Clarity → Control → Performance → Insight → Value

Bringing that to life:

1. Numbers create clarity

Everything starts with getting the right numbers.

This doesn’t mean creating more numbers and KPIs. It means identifying and agreeing on the right ones.

If you don’t have confidence in your key metrics e.g. detailed sales data, margin by segment, cash conversion then you’re making judgement calls rather than data driven evidence based decisions.

Ask yourself: Do I trust the numbers I’m using to run this business?

2. Visibility creates control

This is where most businesses fall down. You might have the data but can you actually see it?

Can you view daily performance? Can you spot issues early? Or are you waiting for month-end to tell you what’s already gone wrong?

This is the turning point. Because without visibility, control is just an illusion.

3. Accountability drives performance

Once the numbers are visible, ownership becomes clear.

People know what they’re responsible for. They can readily keep right up to date with how they are doing. They know when they’re off track.

That’s when finance stops being retrospective and starts driving behaviour across the business.

4. Connected data creates insight

The uncomfortable truth is that most finance teams aren’t short of data. They’re drowning in disconnected data.

Finance says one thing. Sales says another. Operations tells a different story altogether.

Until you connect it, you’re only ever seeing part of the picture.

If you can’t see the full picture, you can’t measure what’s really driving performance.

5. Insight creates value

Now things start to change.

You’re no longer asking: what happened? You’re asking: what should we do next?

That’s where you start to:

  • Spot opportunities earlier
  • Manage risk properly
  • Allocate capital with confidence

And if you are thinking about a transaction in the future you can tell a much more compelling story to investors or buyers.

And that’s ultimately how value gets created.

So
 where’s your business’s smartwatch?

This isn’t about dashboards for the sake of it but having one place where you can look and instantly know:

  • Where you are
  • What’s working
  • What isn’t
  • And what needs your attention

Because if a smartwatch can do that for your health, there’s no reason you shouldn’t have the same insights for your business.

Final thought

If you take one thing away from this, make it this:

You can’t measure what you can’t see.

And if you’re honest, there are probably areas of your business today where visibility just isn’t where it needs to be. That’s exactly where we tend to start conversations.

At Cortus Advisory Group, we work directly with Finance Directors to help turn fragmented, hard-to-trust data into clear, connected insight you can actually use to run the business – day to day, not just at month-end.

If you’re thinking, “we’ve got the data, but we’re not really seeing it” – it’s probably worth a conversation.
