When Johanna Naujoks first joined us as an intern in the Transaction Services team, she brought with her a global perspective shaped by life in Germany, studies in the UK, and a year in Hong Kong. That international mindset, combined with her curiosity, attention to detail, and drive to learn, made a real impression.
After returning to complete her degree at Durham, Johanna has now rejoined Cortus full-time as an Analyst in our London team. In this interview, she reflects on what drew her back, the “strong sense of connectedness” she felt from day one, and how she’s looking forward to contributing to Cortus Advisory Group’s continued growth — both here in the UK and as we strengthen our international networks across Europe and beyond.
Can you tell us a bit about your background and what first drew you to Cortus?
I’m originally from Germany and moved to the UK to study Business and Management at Durham University, graduating in 2024. During my degree I spent a year abroad at the Chinese University of Hong Kong, where I deepened my interest in accounting and finance. I gained experience in transactions and advisory at PwC, KPMG, and Cortus – where I joined the Transaction Services team for a five-month internship after graduating.
What attracted me to Cortus Advisory Group was the focus on mid-market transactions and the firm’s size. I knew being part of a smaller, dynamic team would give me deeper insights into how businesses operate end-to-end and allow me to contribute meaningfully from day one.
What made you want to come back full-time?
During my internship I felt I was constantly learning – through project work, training, and by observing how the wider team operated. Weekly WIP calls and newsletters gave me visibility into the firm, and the open culture made it easy to develop quickly.
Even after leaving, I could see Cortus continuing to grow, which made me want to be part of that journey. I knew I’d be joining a business where I could grow alongside the firm, especially as I would be joining on the ACA training contract to qualify as a Chartered Accountant with ICAEW.
How has it felt stepping into a permanent role?
From day one I was involved in a project and could see it through end-to-end, owning specific workstreams. That level of responsibility was incredibly rewarding and different from the internship, where the focus was more on exposure to different areas of Transaction Services.
What are you most looking forward to working on?
I’m keen to work across a variety of sectors, particularly consumer and healthcare, and to build my data-analytics skills. I also want to help promote Cortus’ welcoming and supportive culture as the London team continues to grow.
Was there a standout moment during your internship?
Getting involved in a project from start to finish was definitely a highlight. It helped me understand why the work mattered, from scoping and project management through to client delivery, and made everything feel more purpose-driven.
How have your skills grown since you first joined?
I’ve developed both technically and professionally. I’ve always been detail-oriented and curious, and Cortus has helped me channel that into structured problem-solving and analysis. I’ve gained confidence, sharpened my communication skills, and been surprised by how quickly I’ve grown thanks to the trust placed in me.
What’s something you’ve learned about working in a team like ours?
The strong sense of connectedness and support really stood out. From the beginning I felt welcomed and trusted, even as an intern. The balance between professionalism and culture makes Cortus a great place to work: high standards, but always with a light-hearted, friendly atmosphere.
Any advice for new interns? Stay curious and ask questions. Try things outside your comfort zone and be honest about what you’re working on or when you need help, people appreciate that openness and initiative.
What do you love most about the culture at Cortus?
It’s genuinely supportive and collaborative. People are approachable and always willing to help, even when busy. As I start my ACA journey, knowing the team will support me makes balancing work and study much less daunting.
